The cartoonist Frédéric Deligne sketches the problems of access to care

Frédéric Deligne’s books should be reimbursed by Social Security. After Social Zeroswhich made fun of our addiction to screens, the designer of the Nice-Matin Group publishes Checkup (1). In 128 pages, it covers all aspects of the French relationship to medicine. With, always, this talent to make laugh at a depressing reality.

“I know the subject well. smiles the artist. For more than twenty years I have collaborated with magazines like Doctor Impact or The Generalist. The difficulties of access to care, medical desertification, these are themes that I master perfectly.”

Almost all of these drawings are unpublished. “I had left to make sixty, specifies Frédéric Deligne. But I still work the same way; one idea calls for another. When I returned an initial batch of 70 sketches to my editor, he encouraged me to do more. I got to 100, then 120. We stuck the slider at 180, but I could have continued.”

At sixty, Deligne has lost none of the freshness of the young man who timidly pushed open the door of the chained duck to present his first sketches.

“The only thing that has changed is the technique, he confides. Today, I generally work on a tablet, I color on a computer. Before, everything was done by hand and I sent my drawings by fax!”

An addiction rather than a passion

Drawing, he confesses, is not a “passion” for him: “Rather an addiction! I can’t help interpreting the news in my own way. The only time I was unhappy in my career was when I worked in . I was asked to highlight products, whereas I like to do exactly the opposite! I gave up after two weeks.”

Since then, he tracks down the gloom and heals our little strokes of the blues with great pencil strokes. A hell of a good idea, mine nothing…
