A British woman claimed to have been kidnapped, sexually assaulted, and trafficked by an Asian gang, shaking up the local community, and it was revealed that all of her statements were lies. Women have previously pointed out innocent men and claimed sexual assault on several occasions, but the men who were unfairly accused of being the culprits received death threats or even attempted extreme measures.

On the 21st (local time), the BBC reported in detail the case of Eleanor Williams (23), who was sentenced to 8 years and 6 months in prison for causing confusion in the investigative system by lying, through a 50-minute documentary.

According to reports, the incident dates back to May 2020. At the time, Williams posted a photo of his face covered in bruises on social media, claiming he had been “beaten and sexually assaulted by a gang of Asian men.” As the post quickly spread through other social media, innocent men became victims. They received not only verbal abuse but also death threats. Some even lost their businesses.

Williams has previously claimed to have been sexually assaulted several times. In some cases, there was no evidence and Williams withdrew his report, but some led to actual detention. In 2019, a man was detained in prison for 10 weeks due to Williams’ false report, but was released due to insufficient evidence. At the time, Williams said, “He threatened me with a knife. “They grabbed him by the hair, pulled him into the bathroom, took off his clothes, and hit him with the shower head,” he said.

The false report of being gang-raped by an Asian gang was so large that investigative agencies called it a ‘grooming scandal’ and launched a large-scale investigation. It is said that the location where Williams was kidnapped by the gang was explained in great detail, even drawing a building layout, leaving no room for doubt.

However, there was no evidence on CCTV to substantiate Williams’ claims. Upon further investigation, police discovered that cell phone records contradicted Williams’ statement.

Nevertheless, Williams continued to make his own plays. This time, the claim was that a man drugged her, sexually assaulted her, and forced her to have sex with two Asian men. From this point on, the police had doubts about the credibility of Williams’ statement, but continued the investigation out of concern about possible actual damage. During this investigation, two men who were innocently identified as suspects even attempted extreme actions.

The police’s suspicion that Williams’ statement was false was confirmed by CCTV footage taken in Preston, Lancashire, England. Here, rather than providing evidence of sexual assault, it shows Williams first approaching the man she identified as a suspect, borrowing a lighter, and talking for a moment before breaking up.

Williams eventually transitioned from victim to suspect. On May 19, 2020, police visited Williams’ home to arrest him. Even upon his arrest, Williams did not stop his lies. He repeated claims such as “He was brutally sexually assaulted by a gang of Asian men.” He also presented as evidence a hammer that was said to have been used as an intimidation tool. As a result of forensic analysis, the only DNA found on the hammer was Williams’s. The injuries, including bruises on his face, were also found to be self-inflicted marks.

Detectives explained that it was difficult to determine why Williams continued to make false claims. The detective in charge of Williams’ newspaper said, “She is clearly a girl with a lot of problems, and I feel really sorry for that,” and added, “If we had not found out quickly, Williams’ lies would have deepened even more.” At the same time, he said, “There is a risk that actual victims of sexual crimes will be reluctant to report due to Williams’ actions.”
