The Case of Maude Dambremont: Attempted Murder and Münchhausen Syndrome

2023-12-12 15:22:00

Maude Dambremont was found guilty of attempted murder and murder of her seven-month-old son this Tuesday afternoon at the Hainaut assizes.

The jury answered the following questions:

  • Guilt: yes.
  • Aggravating circumstances: yes.

Back to the facts

The mother was on trial for killing her 7-month-old baby in 2019 in Gosselies.

The 26-year-old young woman is found guilty of fatally force-feeding her baby with a bottle of thickened milk. Münchhausen syndrome was also at the heart of the debates. This psychological pathology is possible. This would therefore mean that the mother was attacking her child to draw attention to herself. It turned out that she had taken her baby to the hospital twenty times since his birth.

The personality of Maude Dambremont was also at the heart of the debates. She is described as an unstable person, who does not accept criticism. She lied many times. All this makes the deliberation a little more complicated.

Reaction from lawyers

“We have no rational explanation from the accused. We have explanations and answers given by a whole series of participants in the case. And in particular medical expertise which is fundamental. But “the accused remains in her positions. In my opinion, this is difficult to reconcile”, declares Thomas Cloet, the lawyer for the civil parties.

“Another problem that could arise is the morbid and macabre research of the accused. The lies she has told. The instability she has shown. We hope to have convinced the jury to sort things out , and not to retain elements which are not directly linked to this drama”, says Ricardo Bruno, the defense lawyer.
