The chairman of the Air and Railway Accident Investigation Agency has resigned 2024-03-29 00:22:36

According to Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport sources: “For those rushing to link this to the Tempe tragedy, it is clarified that the head of this investigation is, by law, the Deputy President of the body, with expertise in railway matters.

In particular, as defined in article 4 par.1 of Law 5014/2023 on the establishment of the E.O.D.A.S.A.A.M., in cases of investigation of railway accidents and incidents, the powers of the President are exercised by the Backup president.

In the next period of time, a new President will be appointed to the Agency, who, according to the same law, should have experience in aviation matters, since, as stated in the same article, the President must have scientific knowledge and experience in the aviation sector and the Deputy President, scientific knowledge and experience in the railway sector.

Also, according to article 7 par. 2 of the same law, the President represents E.O.D.A.S.A.A.M. against any other Authority or against third parties, judicially and extrajudicially, for matters related to the competence of the aviation sector. The Deputy President represents E.O.D.A.S.A.A.M. for matters related to the competence of the railway sector.

It is recalled that, already, a competent body of the Organization (consisting of three investigators) is dealing with the Tempe railway accident, conducting an investigation – independent of the judiciary – which aims to highlight the systemic safety problems of the railway.

In this direction, a series of actions have been taken to collect the necessary data from the judiciary and all the railway bodies involved, including the Railway Regulatory Authority (RA).

Cooperation was also developed with the European Railway Agency (ERA), following a request on September 30, 2023, with the aim of assisting special experts in the investigation of the accident.”
