The Changing World and the Dominican Republic’s Role in Global Relations

The Spanish writer and colonel, Pedro Baños, has warned the Dominican Republic that “this is not the time to close the doors absolutely to anyone (countries)”, referring to the close diplomatic relations with countries such as the United States and the People’s Republic of China; even though there have been North American reprimands about the relationship with Haiti.

Baños touched on this issue during a visit yesterday to the LISTÍN DIARIO facilities, where he was received by the director Miguel Franjul and they addressed international issues related to the war between Russia and Ukraine, the sociopolitical and economic situation in Europe, Artificial Intelligence, the “fentanyl” and other issues of global repercussion.

There, the Spanish writer was asked about the “dependency” that the Dominican Republic has maintained with the United States in its relations and how it could direct its gaze towards China, answering the following: “You have an added problem, which is the proximity to the United States Joined”.

“Obviously it is not that you (DR) depend on the United States, but that the United States will never allow you to leave that dependency,” Baños said.

Given this, he suggested that any government has to be “intelligent enough to play all possible sides”, due to the changes that the world is currently experiencing.

For Baños, it is not about getting involved in the political system of a country, in this case China, which has taken it as an example, nor is it about “praising” that territory, but about “seeing how you can defend your national interests in a totally changing context.

“Right now, closing yourself off to anyone (nations) would be a big mistake, because you don’t know what this (the changes) is going to generate, you don’t know if the United States is going to continue being a great empire or tomorrow it will disappear,” he warned, also emphasizing, that it is not necessary to sympathize with the political system of another country, but to defend the idiosyncrasies and particular values that each people or nation has differently. Is it convenient for the Dominican Republic to play a balance of power, opening up more to China? he was asked.

– Totally in all aspects -, said Baños who has written the books “This is how the world is dominated”, “World domination”, “Mental domination”, “The world crossroads” and “Power. A strategist reads Machiavelli.

The big Chinese factory

As Baños has stated, the large Chinese factory and its power with the “latest technology” has caused European States not to produce their own products, since, according to their arguments, it is “easy to bring cheap products from China”, speaking in this case from the time of the coronavirus.

“It is that we are in Europe, that I am no longer saying that we did not have the capacity to produce respirators, not even masks, because everything came from China,” he said.

“The problem with that is that to relocate all that, if you are not competitive and you cannot sell cheaper than the others and you no longer have the latest technology, it is a burden, because what company in particular is going to want to do it? Nobody,” she added.

For the intellectual, Europe continues to depend on the “big factory” China, since, as he has stated, it is more beneficial.

Artificial intelligence

In another context aimed at the new trends that Artificial Intelligence (AI) has brought, both positive and negative for society, Pedro Baños assured that “in a way, human beings are beginning to be superfluous. We are no longer useful, because we are no longer a source of energy, we are no longer a source of work and we are beginning to have excess”. “It’s a reality,” he specified, while pointing out that this new technological world “is going to be controlled by a small elite closely related to high technology.”
