The new year 2022 has brought the recovery of the registration tax, which has already been applied to new vehicles since last day 1 with CO2 emissions greater than 121 grams per kilometer traveled.

In practice, this measure affects a large part of the access models to the range, the cheapest ones, since they do not usually have any degree of electrification, and therefore exceed the percentage of emissions that would allow them to get rid of the tax rate.

In fact, among the 10 best-selling cars throughout 2021 in Spain, only two models would get rid of the tax in their basic versions, the
Toyota Corolla
, which in all its variants has hybrid gasoline mechanics, and the
Dacia Sandero
, which in all cases (sold in gasoline and LPG variants) is below 120 grams of CO2.

If we analyze the situation model by model, the car that has sold the most units in Spain over the last year is the Seat Arona. Its cheapest variant is the 1.0 TSI with 95 hp, which with its petrol engine homologous 123 g / km of CO2. In this case, to the current rate price of 18,340 euros, it would be necessary to add the 4.75% corresponding to the registration tax, so the updated price it would be 19,211 euros. The next model in the catalog of
Seat
It is the Arona TGI, also with 95 hp but using natural gas as fuel. Its CO2 emissions are 103 grams per kilometer, so it would be exempt from the registration tax, but its rate starts from 20,440 euros. The Arona closed the year 2021 with a total of 21,946 units registered.

The second position of the year is for the
Hyundai Tucson
, with a total of 21,258 units. In this case the variant of access to the range carries the 1.6 T-GDI gasoline engine and 150 HP of power, with homologated CO2 emissions of 151 g / km. It is therefore also affected by the registration tax, and goes from costing 27,675 euros to 28,989. The 48V Mild Hybrid version of this model is also affected by the climb, since its CO2 emissions are 148 g / km, as well as the 230 hp hybrid, with 127 g / km. The plug-in hybrid (from 46,190 euros), would be spared, for homologate only 31 g / km of CO2.

In third place on the podium in 2021 is the Dacia Sandero. In this case, the access version is the one that mounts the 65 HP SCe petrol engine, which with 120 g / km of CO2 stays at the limit, and therefore gets rid of the registration tax. Its price is 9,734 euros. Even the most powerful version, with 90 hp, reduces this figure to 119 g / km, so it is also exempt from the tax. In 2021, a total of 20,419 units of the model were sold in Spain.

Not so good luck the Peugeot 2008, which with 19,426 registrationss stays in fourth position. The cheapest version is the Puretech 100 gasoline finish, which with 100 HP of power emits an approved average of 123 g / km of CO2. For very little you have to pay the registration tax of 4.75%, going therefore from 22,400 to 23,640 euros.

The fifth best-selling car was the Toyota Corolla, with 16,983 units. It is a car that only has hybrid gasoline versions. The entry model is the 124H Active Tech, with 122 hp of power and 102 g / 100 km of CO2, and therefore exempt from paying the registration tax. Its rate remains at about 21,650 euros.

From here and up to the tenth position, all the cars that head the Top of the best sellers in Spain in their most economical variants will have to apply the tax increase to their price.

Thus, the Peugeot 3008 Puretech 130 petrol emits 140 g / km of CO2, and its price which was 28,242 now becomes 29,583. 16,812 units were registered in the last year.

In the number 7 position was the Seat León, with 16,691 cars registered. The 90 hp TSi petrol version it cost 21,040 euros until December, but by emitting 124 g / km of CO2, its new rate is 22,039 euros.

The Volkswagen T-Roc, which registered 15,988 cars last year, reaches 135 g / km of CO2 in the 1.0 TSI version of gasoline and 110 hp. Its price therefore goes from 20,820 to 30,188 euros.

The Citroën C3 ended the year in ninth position and with 15,948 cars sold. Its 83 hp Live Pack petrol version emits 122 g / km of CO2. That is, for only 1 gram you have to pay the registration tax and It goes from having a starting price of 12,621 to now cost 13,220 euros.

Finally, in the tenth position is the Fiat 500, which in its multiple variants of 3 and 5 doors registered 15,941 units in Spain. The version 500X 1.0 Firefly of 120 CV of gasoline it cost 16,889 euros last year. But having CO2 emissions of 142 g / 100 km, the rate increases in 2022 to 17,691 euros.

Practically all these models They have in their range versions that are exempt from registration tax, but in neither case are they the cheapest versions.
