1904

Anton Chekhov’s play “The Cherry Orchard” premieres at the Moscow Art Theater.

1929

The first German-language sound film – a 383 meter long short film entitled “The Last Song” – premieres in Berlin.

1954

The politician Milovan Djilas, who was previously considered the second man after Tito, is expelled from the Yugoslav Politburo and removed from all other positions.

1984

The Conference on Confidence Building and Disarmament in Europe (KVAE) opens in Stockholm.

1994

An earthquake measuring 6.6 on the Richter scale shakes the Los Angeles area. At least 61 people are killed and more than 8,000 people are injured. The damage is around $30 billion. A curfew is imposed to prevent looting.

2009

Israel ends a three-week offensive in the Gaza Strip with a unilateral ceasefire. A day later, Hamas announced a seven-day ceasefire. The fighting claimed at least 1,300 lives.

2019

Sonja Klima, ex-wife of the former SPÖ Chancellor Viktor Klima and president of the Ronald McDonald Children’s Aid, will be the new head of the Spanish Riding School in Vienna. The supervisory board decides in favor of her, although the four-member advisory board only considers the rider and administrative manager of the riding arena, Herwig Radnetter, to be suitable. The decision leads to protests.
