“The CNE had a certain autonomy under the exercise of Tibisay Lucena, the opposite of Pedro Calzadilla”: expert on electoral issues

This Wednesday, April 12, the former president of the National Electoral Council (CNE) of Venezuela, Tibisay Lucena, died.

“Notable daughter of Venezuela, former president of the Electoral Power and Minister of University Education. She was a true militant for life, and she fought her last battle without truce. Our condolences to her family and friends. Fly high sister,” the vice president wrote on Twitter of the Venezuelan regime, Delcy Rodriguez.

Lucena, who led more than 18 electoral processes at the head of the National Electoral Council from 2006 to 2020, She currently served as Minister for University Education.

In dialogue with the NTN24 program La Tarde, Eugenio MartĂnez, a journalist specializing in electoral processes, spoke about the CNE that the late Venezuelan official, Tibisay Lucena, managed at the time.

“She came to the CNE at the hands of the National Constituent Assembly in 2000, she had two stages, one in which she gained international recognition, and another from 2008 onwards, in which there were considerable successes and errors”Martinez said.

“Many opposition political actors preferred to come to terms with Lucena. As of 2018 Tibisay presented a more political role in the CNE”continued the also university professor.

At the time, the expert mentioned: “As Tibisay gained political space, his decisions began to be noticed in terms of political bias. One of the things that public opinion does not forget is the time it took Lucena to give the electoral results.

“CNE critics have a lot to do with the public perception that Tibisay gained. The CNE had a certain autonomy under the exercise of Tibisay Lucena, contrary to Pedro Calzadilla (…) She withdrew from the CNE due to her illness, her profile was important to maintain her permanence in the CNE for so many years,” added the interviewee.
