What if tomorrow you had your vital card on your smartphone? The digital version of this precious piece will soon be possible, insofar as the National Commission for Computing and Liberties, the Cnil, has given its consent. The organization for the protection of personal data and individual freedoms therefore authorizes the launch, but in compliance with certain conditions.

It is a government-led project, the outlines of which are now drawn. The CNIL validates the dematerialized version of the smart card. This will now take, for those who wish, the form of an application. But the commission recalls a necessity: “ there is a balance to be found between the offer of an innovative digital service, making it possible to simplify the daily lives of users, and the need not to accentuate the digital divide ».

The challenges of a digital and dematerialized version of the health insurance card

Because if the dematerialized version offers a real advantage, it also poses challenges. The launch of the application is therefore conditional on the possibility for the user who wishes to request support from his health insurance fund in order to install the famous application.

This will allow several operations such as consultation of rights, downloading of data necessary for support and monitoring of reimbursements. It could also, in the long term, allow secure identification to another dematerialized health service, such as a complementary mutual.

Security guarantees are provided upon installation. The digital vital card may use facial recognition for the first identification. As soon as it becomes available, l’application France identity will also allow secure authentication. The digital vital card is currently in the experimental phase in 10 departments, it must be offered to all policyholders, with an expiry date of December 31, 2025.
