On Monday, US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken expressed his concern about the presence of the Russian Wagner Group in Sudan, where battles have been going on for ten days between the army and the Rapid Support Forces, leaving hundreds dead.

“We are very concerned about the presence of the Wagner Group in Sudan,” Blinken said in a joint press conference with his Kenyan counterpart.

He continued, “The Wagner Group, which is active in Mali and the Central African Republic and participates in the Ukraine war, brings with it wherever it moves more death and destruction.”

In a related context, Finnish Foreign Minister Pekka Haavisto said, on Monday, that there are risks that the Russian “Wagner” group could benefit from the current crisis in Sudan, adding that the European Union should do more regarding the situation there.

“It is not fair that all foreigners leave the country in these circumstances,” Haavisto said upon his arrival at the venue for a meeting of EU ministers in Luxembourg.

He continued, “If we leave, we also leave some room for Wagner forces and Russia to play this game.”

The Wagner Group denies the accusations

  • Last Wednesday, the Russian private military group, “Wagner”, denied its involvement in what is happening in Sudan, and said that it has nothing to do with the battles taking place in the African country.
  • “Given that a large number of inquiries have been received from various foreign media about Sudan, most of them provocative, we consider it necessary to inform everyone that Wagner personnel have not had a presence in Sudan for more than two years,” the group wrote on Telegram.
