The Controversial Firing of Carlos Figueroa from Viña del Mar Festival Orchestra and Impending Lawsuit

After 12 years of work at Quinta Vergara, the director of the Viña del Mar Festival Orchestra, Carlos Figueroa, was fired from his position. He accused that they had blood in his eye and is already considering a lawsuit.

“This takes me by surprise. When they formally inform me there is no explanation. There is no musical explanation, it’s not that my orchestra sounded bad, that we did the job poorly, that I didn’t get along with the team…,” commented Figueroa, in conversation with the program What I tell you.

The prominent musician said that everything started in 2022, when he tenaciously opposed the decision of the event’s executives to remove the orchestra and replace it with packaged music.

That determination, which generated controversy, was corrected. Not without some friction and resentment involved, of course.

“A month and a half ago they called me to tell me that it seems that the defense that I was doing last year with the musicians had not gone over well with the executives,” Figueroa declassified.

“And in a kind of revenge, they fire you,” journalist Sergio Rojas told him. “Yes,” confirmed the affected person, adding that they notified him by email and through the production company Bizarro, which manages the event.

Of course, they explained to Carlos that the decision to fire him “is made by an executive from TVN and another from Channel 13.”

The demand

The musician, who has also worked with names like La Ley or Ricky Martin, was replaced by another well-known in the industry, producer Roberto López, announced with great fanfare by the Viña 2024 organization.

Carlos commented that he is studying the appropriate legal actions because there would be a breach of contract.

He explained that last year, executives backed off from eliminating the orchestra because he had decided to resign. They asked him to stay and he accepted with one condition: “that the orchestra stay for 2023 and 2024.”

“They tell me that everything is ok, everything is in order (…) But my condition to sign was 2023 and 2024, and they overlooked that. “I have a meeting with the lawyers who are advising me,” she confirmed.
