The Controversial Negligence at the Sports Ethics Center: Indictment, Controversy, and Preferential Treatment

It has been revealed that Mr. A, who was indicted in connection with the case of issuing a false internship confirmation to Cho Min, the daughter of former Justice Minister Cho Kuk, is causing controversy due to negligence in his work while moving to the Sports Ethics Center launched during the Moon Jae-in administration. The Sports Ethics Center is an independent organization under the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, established in August 2020 to eradicate sports corruption following MeToo complaints in the sports industry in 2019.

According to data from the Sports Ethics Center submitted to the office of People Power Party Rep. Bae Hyun-jin on the 23rd, Team Leader A of the Ethics Center was involved in the speed skating leader sexual assault case (January 2021), the harassment case between Daegu FC players (April 2021), and the Gyeongbuk Sports Council. It was revealed that the archery club violence incident (August 2021) was left ‘unprocessed’ without being investigated. These incidents received considerable attention through media reports at the time. According to regulations, once an incident is reported, measures must be taken to protect the victim, assigned a case number, and an investigation initiated, but this was not done. This fact was made known through National Assembly audit data from Rep. Bae’s office.

Mr. A worked as the executive director of the Seoul National University Public Interest and Human Rights Law Center when it issued a false internship confirmation to Mr. Cho Min. He also served as the head of the investigation department of the April 16 Sewol Ferry Disaster Special Investigation Committee. He transferred from Seoul National University’s Human Rights Center to the Sports Ethics Center in June 2020 when the ‘Cho Kuk Incident’ broke out. For this reason, there was criticism at the time that he had moved to a position with preferential treatment for the ‘government inner circle’. Mr. A said in a phone call with this newspaper, “It is inappropriate to personally respond to work-related matters.”

Regarding Mr. B, the director of the military investigation agency, there was also a revelation that “I only practiced golf in the office.” According to the ‘mid- to long-term management strategy advancement and organizational diagnosis interim report’ published by the Ethics Center last September, many cases of Mr. B’s negligence and abuse of power were reported anonymously by employees. Employees said, “Mr. B doesn’t pay and only practices his golf swing.” “He makes me mow the lawn outside his office window.” “He disappears at 4 p.m., so I can’t work.” “When he wants to eat, the employees make excuses and use the company credit card to eat.” It revealed content such as “buying something.”
