The Dangers Faced by Garbage Collectors: A Look at the Incivility and Risks of the Job in Marcinelle

Garbage collectors sometimes have to deal with uncivil, even dangerous, behavior from motorists. Just last week, in Marcinelle, a young 19-year-old worker was hit by a car while picking.

Diego, 19, has been a loader for over a year. Last Thursday, around 7:15 a.m., while he was doing his morning rounds, he was the victim of a violent accident.

“I was on the step and I saw a car coming behind me. And without me being able to do anything, the car drove into my leg and I got stuck”says the young man.

A priori, no fracture. It is a miracle. Diego escapes with muscle contusions. Not everyone is so lucky. Although accidents are rare, they can be fatal. To raise awareness among motorists, an awareness campaign was carried out recently.

Horn blasts, inappropriate gestures and insults punctuate the daily lives of those who get up at 4 a.m. every morning to improve ours.

“Still too often, we see that hurried or distracted motorists endanger our teams,” declared Philippe Teller, the general director of Tibi (Intercommunal waste management company).

Incivility has become more and more numerous in recent years. “I have fears every day. They honk and moan. Between 8 a.m. and 8:30 a.m., people are very nervous,” said Jérôme, a loader.

Every day, hundreds of trucks crisscross Wallonia to collect our waste.
