The Dangers of Excessive Vitamin D Intake: Risks and Symptoms to be Aware of

2024-01-13 15:25:49

In the attempt to nourish the body with the necessary vitamins, some people often resort to supplements – capsules and vials – without considering that there is a risk of saturating their intake.

According to the Ministry of Health, vitamins are classified as water-soluble (the body uses them and expels them through urine) and fat-soluble (stored in the body’s fatty tissue). Within the latter are A, D, E and K.

When fat-soluble vitamins are ingested in excess, they cause hypervitaminosis. This means that, most of the time, the kidneys cannot eliminate them and they generate kidney stones.

The vitamin that usually has the greatest “toxicity” in the body is D. Its only food sources are fish, meat and mushrooms; while it is naturally produced with controlled exposure to the sun.

Since it is not “as accessible” to obtain vitamin D, people seek to compensate for the necessary amount through products and supplements. This is when specialists recommend caution.

Vitamin D performs various functions, including maintaining bone health, promoting the absorption of calcium in the intestine, preventing childhood weakness, and also has anti-aging properties.

Under normal conditions, the average consumption of vitamin D for adults is 15 micrograms or 600 International Units.

It is possible to identify if you suffer from hypervitaminosis through physical signs. Once they are detected, consumption of the vitamin should be stopped and medical attention sought to avoid major complications.

According to the Medline Plus site, the symptoms of excess, or toxicity, of vitamin D in the body are:

  • Skin disorders
  • Excessive hair loss
  • Weakness
  • Vomiting
  • Constipation
  • Decreased appetite
  • High blood pressure
  • Frequent urination
