Dr. Nelly Shams, a clinical nutritionist, published a video clip from a “podcast” that she presented on her official page on the “YouTube” platform, for her dialogue with Dr. Mostafa Gamal, a consultant in bariatric, digestive and endoscopic surgeries, talking about the gastric sleeve and its controls.
Dr. Mustafa Jamal said, during the interview, that a patient with acidity and GERD is prohibited from performing the sleeve gastrectomy, as it can cause him serious damage that may lead to cancer.
The consultant of obesity and laparoscopic surgeries explained that when the operation is performed, 80% of the stomach is removed, so that the stomach becomes small in size, noting that the advantage of the small size is forcing the person to eat a small meal.
And he continued: “If you eat a uniform from us, the rest of the food will go back because there is no place for it, so rewinding here became compulsory, as the body no longer takes the calories it used to take before the sleeve gastrectomy, but in contrast, the small size of the stomach, the pressure inside it will remain high, and the acids will begin to move from the place of high pressure that is the stomach, to a place of low pressure which is the esophagus.”
He pointed out that in this case, acidity and reflux will occur in the esophagus in a very large way, as the acids will remain in the esophagus most of the time, and the person will always feel acidity, reflux, and the tendency to vomit, even if he does not eat any food.
And Dr. Mustafa Jamal added: “So if the sleeve gastrectomy was done and the size of his stomach was small, the acidity would increase and harm the esophageal wall in the long term and lead to the occurrence of ulcers, and may lead to the occurrence of what is known as “Barrett”, which turns into a cancerous tumor in the long term.”
