Consuming pounds of food in a few hours. This is the challenge launched by some Internet users… putting their health at risk without realizing it.

Without realizing it, because eating, like other addictive behaviors like sex or drug use, triggers the release of dopamine. Which acts as a reward. So the more they eat, the more they want to eat…

So what happens in the short term?

Overeating causes the stomach to expand beyond its normal size. “The enlarged stomach pushes against other organs, which makes you uncomfortable,” explain scientists from the University of Texas. “This discomfort can take the form of a feeling of fatigue. Your clothes may also feel tight. »

Overeating can also cause nausea, acid reflux and heartburn. The stomach can also produce gas. Finally the metabolism can speed up trying to burn those extra calories. This can manifest as a feeling of heat, sweating or even dizziness.

And in the long term?

Eating more than one’s physiological needs is necessarily accompanied by weight gain. But it’s not just about the unwanted calories. Overeating affects the body in various ways. Being overweight also damages the joints. People consuming too many calories are also more likely to suffer from depression and anxiety, sleep disturbances.

But the risks don’t stop there. This overeating increases blood pressure, cholesterol and triglyceride levels; and therefore the risk of many diseases such as cardiovascular pathologies or type 2 diabetes.

Finally, being overweight can also increase the risk of cancer. According to the International Center for Research on Cancer in Lyon, overweight and obesity are responsible for half a million new cancers each year worldwide.

Thus are multiplied the risks of cancers of the oesophagus, colon, rectum, liver, pancreas, kidneys, postmenopausal breast, cervix and ovaries.
