A lethal cocktail that endangers thousands of people has taken over the streets of the United States in recent weeks. It happens that to the massive increase in the consumption of opioids, such as fentanyl, xylazine has now been added, a drug manufactured in China that has cornered the illegal narcotics market and causes serious damage.

Xylazine is a powerful animal sedative that is cheap and easy to obtain. In addition to its low price, the aforementioned drug has another effect that puts specialists on alert: outside of the lethargic state, its immediate consequence causes a reversal of addiction treatments in people who consume it.

Xylazine can cause serious skin wounds and when mixed with other substances such as fentanyl, one of the biggest problems facing American society regarding drug use, it generates serious health problems.

“All we know is that there are a lot of people taking xylazine and a lot of them are dying, but that doesn’t mean xylazine is dying,” said Dr. Lewis Nelson of Rutgers New Jersey Medical School, who advises to federal regulators.

This drug is used to sedate animals such as horses or other large animals, and is currently mixed with other opioids to increase their effect. The derivative product is called “tranq” or “tranq dope” and users claim it is more potent, “almost like heroin.”

Traffickers began using this product because it is cheaper than fentanyl, which produces greater profits.

In humans, the drug can cause breathing and heart rates to slow. It is also linked to severe skin ulcers and abscesses, which can lead to infections, tissue breakdown, and amputations.

The city that suffers the most from the effects of xylazine is Philadelphia, where paramedics warn that the drugs they use to revive people who stopped breathing due to overdose have no effect when people consume this drug.
