The Debate Over Brasserie Prices in Belgium: Peter Goossens’ Departure Raises Concerns

2023-11-21 11:34:00

The exit of Peter Goossens, three-star Michelin chef, is cause for concern.

By estimating that the minimum to pay in a brasserie for a decent meal is €150 per person, this demonstrates either a total disconnection from the daily life of Belgians, or a certain form of contempt or doubt regarding its colleagues who offer menus to a price well below €150. And some of which have been distinguished by the Michelin.

Furthermore, if a good meal in a good brasserie were to be charged at least €150, the majority of restaurants could close due to lack of customers. Because how talented Peter Goossens is, used to working in the kitchens of the best restaurants, we cannot accept that a dinner in a (good) brasserie, starter-main course-dessert, is now charged €150 per person.

Even at La Rigue, its posh brasserie in Knokke, where the sole meunière, minute steak tartare or pure Holstein fillet are certainly delicious. We also wonder where the Chef has lunch when he is not in the kitchen. Because, yes, you can eat very well, simply or even in chic restaurants distinguished by the guides, for a much more reasonable price than in the most chic brasserie in the country.
