The Decline of ATMs in France: Threatening Cash Withdrawals and Public Services

In France, it is undeniable, public services are declining. The state is becoming more and more disengaged. Post offices, public finance centers close regularly, especially in small towns. This decline, which complicates the lives of citizens, is also reported for ATMs. These distributors are disappearing more and more, endangering this service, especially in rural areas.

Indeed, these distributors installed by the banks close one after the other because of their lack of profitability. According to official statistics, there are more than 12,000 ticket vending machines (DAB) which have been removed since 2010 in France. These disappearances occur mainly in rural rural areas.

This situation will only get worse in the future. This phenomenon will indeed increase with the pooling of ATMs. This pooling will bring with it new deletions. which raises questions about the possibility of the disappearance of cash withdrawals in France. Considered as a public service, the disappearance of these distributors therefore amplifies the decline of various services intended to make life easier for citizens.

Distributors are no longer profitable. Cash withdrawals threatened

It must also be said that modernization has something to do with it. In recent years, the French have increasingly used contactless payment and bank cards, which have become widespread. The tasks are also facilitated by the integration of these payment methods on the telephone and the multiplication of orders on the internet. Payment in cash is declining and so are withdrawals from distributors. Thus, distributors are no longer profitable. The banks understood it. In the third quarter of the current year, these banks will pool these distributors to save money. This should impact users who will still see new distributors closed.

These distributors will therefore inevitably disappear, as was the case with telephone booths. The market demands it because of the imperatives of profitability which condition these services. This reduction poses a problem above all for the inequalities it creates between rural areas and urban areas. Indeed, in remote towns, it is sometimes necessary to count about ten kilometers before finding a distributor, so when in the big cities, they are still very present.
