The Decline of Robert la Frite: Impact on Charleroi’s Small Businesses and City Center

Robert la Frite is ancient history in Charleroi. This regional institution, established in the city since 1952, announced its closure at the beginning of the week, sparking great emotion among residents and local residents. If the latter say they are surprised, among traders, this bankruptcy is not really a shock, quite the contrary.

Questioned in RTL info 1 p.m., some of them even told us that we should expect other problems of this kind in the future. “The main problems are parking, insecurity,” says for example Aurelio Piccicuto, who runs a café in the city center. “When you park in a car park and find yourself with a vandalized car when you leave, it’s not very pleasant”he then confides.

Retailers are actually seeing a drop in the number of customers. For a specific reason. “It’s a question of frequentation of city centers, which are deserted by people because habits have changed in recent years”, estimates for example Nicolas Gea, himself installed in the very center. Other cities are also making this observation. This is not a unique case in Charleroi. “Whether in Namur or Mons, all small traders are suffering. In the case of the catering industry, the increase in wages of 10 to 12%, land register revenues which are increasing…”explains Fabrizzio Padovan, President of the Union of Merchants of downtown Charleroi.

The city claims that meetings are organized in every street in the city, to try to fight against insecurity, incivility and to strengthen the attractiveness of the city center. The number of business openings would, however, be greater than the number of closures in Charleroi in recent months.
