The Democratic Party of Korea apologized for the banner phrase that sparked controversy for belittling young people, saying, “No matter what the planning intention, if it was inconvenient for the public and party members, it was clearly a mistake.”

Secretary-General Cho Jung-sik said this at a press conference at the National Assembly today, saying, “I should not pass the responsibility on to the company, but it was the party’s negligence, and as the secretary-general in charge of party affairs, I apologize to the people and party members.”

Secretary-General Cho said, “The controversial banner was a teaser advertisement for the Democratic Party,” and explained, “It was an idea with an unconventional promotional concept from an external expert, but as a result, the party failed to carefully examine it and proceeded with the implementation process.”

The Democratic Party also plans to postpone the ‘Galaxy Project’ event, which it tried to promote through banners, and reconsider from the beginning.

The ‘Galaxy Project’ is a youth-related campaign event planned by the Democratic Party ahead of the general election. Jeong Tae-ho, head of the Democratic Research Institute, said, “The core content is a ‘unit party,’” and “a group of people with the same interests, or a party within a party.”

‘Unit’ is made up of three keywords. For example, if the keywords Gwanak-gu, youth, and jobs come together, ‘Gwanak Youth Job Party’ is created, and Director Jeong explains that numerous units like this become active within the political party.

The banners that the Democratic Party produced with the concept of ‘2023 New Democratic Party Campaign’ and began posting on the 17th contained phrases such as ‘I don’t know about politics, but I want to live well’ and ‘I don’t know about the economy, but I want to have a lot of money.’

As controversy arose over this for belittling young people, the problematic phrase was deleted and explained as having “nothing to do with the party,” but criticism continued from inside and outside the party.
