Raymond Pauls “Sometimes we turn to raised tones, he immediately goes to the piano, starts playing, and peace and tranquility reign in the house,” Svetlana told reporters about her husband. Maestro Pauls had her first and only wife. The couple lived together for more than 60 years, until the last breath of Epifanova. For her sake, Raymond won the fight with drunkenness.

“I didn’t have anything, I didn’t even have a place to live”

Svetlana was late for the concert of the young Latvian pianist, about which her friends told her a lot. Sitting away from the stage. At first, Epifanova was struck by the music, and only then the girl was finally able to consider the performer. They were introduced after the concert in a friendly company.

The Epifanova family lived a difficult life. After graduating from school in her native Odessa, Svetlana entered the Faculty of Foreign Languages and, as a student, began working as a tour guide at Intourist. She always got along with people easily.

“Once I didn’t come to a concert, I was fired from the Riga Philharmonic. Drinking could last a week. We had to figure out what to do, ”admitted Pauls. Lana, as he called his wife, showed character and insisted on treatment.

“In the neighboring wards lay the insane. All the time I asked myself the question: why am I here, and not on stage, playing now, ”said Raymond Voldemarovich.

But he endured, because without his wife and daughter he could not imagine the future. The composer had the courage not to break even after the hospital.

“I could lose not only my family, but also my life. An abyss loomed ahead. Yes, it was hard to resist, but if I had succumbed to persuasion at least once, I would have come to an end, ”the composer shared. He also quit smoking. “She can’t walk, it’s very hard for her”

Svetlana was the first to hear the composer’s new works. “And in all the years he never played the same tune twice. Sometimes it’s a pity that no one but me will hear it. I ask: “Write down what you just played.” And he replies: “I already forgot,” the maestro’s wife lamented.

Epifanova passed away on August 4, 2023. The wife for a long time stopped appearing with Pauls at any events, although before the spouses were everywhere together.
