The electric Volkswagen Golf will not fit into the ID range

Volkswagen does not plan an electric version of the Golf on its current platform. There will therefore be no ID.Golf, and the electric compact will not arrive before 2028.

Currently, the Volkswagen ID.3 is the electric equivalent of the Golf. The question of the arrival of an ID.Golf has arisen in recent months, in terms of commercial placement of the name.

But Thomas Schäfer, CEO of Volkswagen, revealed that the MEB platform of the ID range forces vehicles to be made taller. Therefore, VW does not want to use the name Golf for a taller compact car. “It is not possible to call any vehicle this way”said Schaefer. “We won’t make that mistake. »

The Golf will therefore have to wait for the arrival of a new platform, in this case the SSP for future electric vehicles. It is this which will make it possible to offer “a flatter roof than the ID.3” and “Golf Genes”Selon Schäfer.

The Golf will have a restyling next year which will allow it to last a few more years in its current version. “This will allow him to be in a good position until the end of the decade. Then we will have to see how the segment develops. »

“If the world evolves completely differently than expected by 2026 or 2027, then we can launch another completely new vehicle. But I don’t think that’s the case. For now, this is not planned. »
