The talented actress of the ‘Fifty Shades’ franchise found herself with a series of unexpected challenges related to her mental health and the emotional impact that one of her most complex and challenging films had on her.

Following Dakota Johnson’s rise to fame with the Fifty Shades franchise (consisting of Fifty Shades of Grey, Fifty Shades Darker, and Fifty Shades Freed), the actress has made tons of great movies. However, nothing compares to her appearance in the mind-bending, creepy, and disturbing Suspiria, directed by Luca Guadagnino. The 2018 movie apparently made Johnson feel deeply affected, more than it made audiences uncomfortable.

When talking about her experience playing Susie Bannion in Dario Argento’s reinterpretation of the Italian giallo classic, Dakota Johnson mentioned that her role affected her mentally. Explaining how she had to seek help from a mental professional after production, the fellow Music, Glamour, and Fame and The Dark Daughter actress apparently warned audiences about the haunting element of the film.

Dakota Johnson required therapy after ‘Suspiria’

Earlier, during an interview with Elle, while discussing her journey, Dakota Johnson revealed how Suspiria “fucked me up so bad I had to go to therapy, honestly I’m not lying to you.” Additionally, Johnson openly explained how she had to seek help from a mental professional once she wrapped production on the film (which also starred Marvel’s Doctor Strange actress Tilda Swinton).

“First of all, I was not psychoanalyzed and I hope I never will be. Sometimes when I work on a project, I realize that I am not ashamed of it, I am a very porous person and I absorb a lot of people’s feelings,” said the protagonist of Cha Cha Real Smooth and that next year will appear on the big screen in Madame Web.

Talking about her working process, the actress mentioned, “When you work with dark subjects sometimes, it can stay with you.” Taking cues from his own experience with Suspiria, where he reunited with Luca Guadagnino after working on Blinded by the Sun, Johnson added: “Talking to someone really nice about it afterward is a really nice way to move forward with the project. My therapist is a really nice woman.”

Trying not to offend anyone, the actress was quick to say that her experience working with the director and cast, including Swinton, Mia Goth and Chloë Grace Moretz, was “extremely stimulating and enriching.”
