The Employment Challenge for Workers 55+ in Belgium: Breaking Through Prejudices and Facilitating the Transmission of Experience

The situation of workers between the ages of 55 and 64 is complex. On the one hand, according to Statbel, the institute responsible for establishing economic statistics in Belgium, the employment rate of these workers was 26.3% in 2000 and it rose to 56.6% in 2022. data which constitutes a sacred progression.

But this positive trend mainly applies to people who are still working. People over 55 who are looking for work again find that they are no longer wanted. Worse, companies do little to keep them working.

In 2013, Tempo-Team, a service provider in the field of temporary work, conducted a study which already made this observation. Finding confirmed by a recent survey conducted in collaboration with KU Leuven.

And in ten years, nothing has changed. Perfect and absurd example of this situation: the main asset of older workers is their experience and yet most companies do not put anything in place to facilitate its transmission to young workers.

The main cause of this absurd situation is prejudice. Despite the shortage on the job market and the increase in the retirement age, the bosses are indeed still wary of older workers. Other data to be convinced: only 17% of companies offer jobs suitable for career purposes to over 50s.
