Since 1985, the charismatic mayor has dominated politics in the capital of Sicily. Now it’s over. Will the mafia return to Palermo?
In just a few days, Leoluca Orlando will measure his study, turn the key, descend the steps of the Palazzo delle Aquile, and step out into the bright light of Piazza Pretoria. Over, over: after decades in which “u sinnacu”, the mayor, steered the fortunes of the city, a new era begins in Palermo on Sunday. Orlando officially retires with a successor elected. He may have to hold out for another two weeks if there is a runoff election.
