The Eternit Factory in Payerne Facing Closure: Swisspearl Consolidating Production

The Eternit factory in Payerne (VD) is threatened. Its owner, the building materials manufacturer Swisspearl, confirmed on Thursday its intention to consolidate production at its headquarters in Niederurnen (GL) as well as in Slovenia.

The closure of the Payerne site could affect 80 employees, specifies Swisspearl, specifying that all those affected will be “offered the possibility of continuing to hold an equivalent job in Niederurnen”.

In order to “maintain its long-term competitiveness”, the group explains that it wishes to transfer the production of roofing slates to its Glarus site by the end of the year, then relocate all logistics there at the start of 2024. the hand molding workshop for garden products, it will be relocated to the Anhovo plant in Slovenia.

A consultation procedure was opened, at the end of which “a social plan should be drawn up with the employees’ commission for those affected by a dismissal”, continues the press release.

Swisspor, potential buyer

Sales and distribution for French-speaking Switzerland will nevertheless remain in Payerne, representing around twenty jobs.

Despite this announcement, the Payerne plant is not necessarily doomed. Swisspearl indicates that the company Swisspor, which specializes in building envelopes, is interested in taking over the site. “Swisspor is already working closely with the municipal authorities to find a solution,” the statement said.

Details on the progress of the project could be announced during the summer.
