The President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen condemned attacks amounting to “terrorism in its most despicable form”, and considered that Israel had “the right to defend itself”. On Sunday evening, she also tweeted a photo of the European Commission displaying a huge Israeli flag.

The head of European diplomacy, Josep Borrell, denounced the “appalling” hostage-taking of civilians and called for their “immediate” release. He expressed the EU’s “solidarity” with Israel. The President of the European Council, Charles Michel, also castigated “indiscriminate attacks once morest Israel and its people (…), inflicting terror and violence on innocent citizens” .
