FIFA boss of referees Pierluigi Collina has revealed that the average added time in a match is 10 minutes following new match guidelines. He stresses that these directives, initially greeted with relative skepticism, are necessary to stick to the evolution of the game.

The former Italian referee recalled that the time must be counted for each VAR intervention and, as in the past, for stoppages caused by injuries and substitutions. During the last World Cup in Qatar, additional time was, on average, 10’30”.

This summer, additional time for the Champions League playoffs averaged 10’00” in the Champions League, 9’12” in the Europa League and 10’08” in the Conference League. Pierluigi Collina clarifies that these guidelines do not affect players’ health. It simply compensates for the time lost when the game stops.
