The evolution of Jaylen Brown impresses without surprising in Boston

After two games in these Finals 2022 (for 20.5 points, 6.5 rebounds and 4.0 assists average), Jaylen Brown has already shown many faces against the Warriors.

In Game 1 (24 points, 7 rebounds, 5 assists, 2 steals and 1 block), he was the Celtics’ most consistent player for three quarters, before taking the game on his own and then guide his people to victory (10 points in the last act), along with Al Horford, Derrick White and Marcus Smart.

In Game 2 (17 points, 6 rebounds and 3 assists), he was then the one who ideally launched Boston into the game (13 points from the first act), before completely disappearing in the last three quarters, at from when he was out for two fouls in the first twelve minutes. Leaving the star to Jayson Tatum, too lonely to resist the armada of Golden State.

The hour of maturity has (finally) come

If the irregularity of Jaylen Brown can therefore still be lacking today, it is however obvious that he has progressed enormously since his first season in the league, six years ago now, with a status of 3rd choice of the Draft 2016. At a time when, statistically, he only averaged 6.6 points, 2.8 rebounds and 0.8 assists (in 17 minutes), against 23.6 points, 6.1 rebounds and 3.5 assists (in 34 minutes).

« Jaylen’s evolution is remarkable », thus book Marcus Smartpresent in Massachusetts since 2014.” In the team, we saw it, we knew it was going to happen, but it was just a matter of time. At the beginning of his career, he played and ran like a headless chicken, we laughed with him. Now he really thinks the game, he lets it come to him and he masters it, we can all see that. »

Substitute during his rookie year, before establishing himself as a starter in his second season in the league and then returning to the bench during the third, Jaylen Brown is installed in the starting five of the Celtics without leaving it since the exercise 2019/20. In the meantime, he became All-Star (2021) and one of the best backs in the NBA.

« Jaylen’s progress is immense », underlines for his part Al Horfordwho played in Boston from 2016 to 2019, before returning in the summer of 2021.” When he came to the league, everyone knew about his abilities, his potential and all that kind of stuff. But it’s not just his game: there’s also his composure, his maturity, his leadership, the way he takes care of himself and his body, the work he does. All of those things paid off for him. And I didn’t know if I could have said any of those things when he showed up here. »

The evolution of a leader who stops at nothing

In the game, despite his obvious status as Jayson Tatum’s lieutenant, Jaylen Brown’s importance to the Celtics’ success is indisputable. But outside the courts, it is just as much, if we are to believe the words of Marcus Smart, the heart and soul of this team.

« He pushes us, especially when Jayson [Tatum] is not himself sometimes “Adds the Defender of the Year 2022, about the leadership of number 7 of the C’s. ” It happens, the teams focus on him, but [Jaylen] knows it and he understands that it’s his turn to take over when it happens. He has also been great at this level this season. »

A declaration which joins that of Al Horford, rather proud to note that Jaylen Brown is at the top of his art, at 25 years old.

« He was always a great guy, but he just didn’t understand how to be a professional. “, confides first the Dominican interior, concerning the complicated beginnings of his teammate. ” He had skills, but his growth over the years is truly impressive. Especially as it continues to grow and improve. He understood how to play as a team and how to deal with challenges because he’s been challenged a lot this season and he’s responded. It’s something I’ve seen in him and it’s the thing I’m most proud of: his way of meeting challenges, responding to them and rising to the occasion. »
