Watch out for the warning signs

According to the mental health bulletin of the national Ministry of Health, suicidal behavior is “a sequence of events called the suicidal process that occurs progressively, in many cases, and begins with thoughts and ideas that are followed by suicidal plans and culminates in one or multiple attempts with a progressive increase in lethality without reaching death, until the consummated suicide”, (Cañón Buitrago SC. Cited in the National Survey of Mental Health – ENSM, 2015).

Suicidal behavior is considered a symptom of an emotional or mental illness or disorder and does not represent a diagnosis in itself and, consequently, the presence of other emotional or behavioral symptoms that together form part of the diagnosis should be reviewedaccording to the International Classification of Diseases, ICD, of the World Health Organization (WHO, 1993), of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (DSM-5) and of the American Psychiatric Association (APA).

It is possible to avoid it

A suicide is triggered by multiple factors, which can be detected in time not only by the affected person, but also by their close environment —family, friends, neighbors—, in order to treat them and improve the individual’s quality of life.

The health authorities recommend that people see a specialist when they notice negative changes in mood or any affectation to mental health.

In the same way, it is invited to be attentive to possible warning signs in friends and family. Advise them, listen to them and offer them permanent company.
