Synopsis:

Colt Seavers (Ryan Gosling) is a professional stuntman who has been trusted to be the mainstay stuntman of famous actor Tom Ryder (Aaron Taylor-Johnson). On a film project, he falls in love with Jody (Emily Blunt), a camera crew operator.

In the middle of the production process, Colt performed a dangerous scene as usual, however, an accident occurred when the safety hook came loose, causing him to fall from a high floor. Colt decides to retire from stuntman and train as a parking valet at his family’s business.

After disappearing from the film world for 18 months, Colt was offered work once more by the producers on his previous project. At first Colt refused until he finally found out that this project was being directed by someone he once liked, Jody.

Colt decided to join the film project. However, in the middle of the project, he was notified by the producer regarding the disappearance of Tom Ryder as the main actor. Colt begins his investigation which involves him in complicated events. He is caught in a conflict that is extraordinarily complex compared to any action film he has ever played in.

Review:

This film succeeds in combining 3 big genres at once without making any of the genres feel lame. Action, comedy and romance are felt in the film and make the audience’s emotions sway throughout the duration of the film.

It’s natural that the action in this film feels convincing, this film was directed by the famous action film director David Leitch. David Leitch has directed various action films such as John Wick Chapters 1-4, Deadpool 2, and The Matrix Reloaded.

His action comedy experience has been proven in Deadpool 2, where he succeeded in balancing the action and comedy elements in the film.

Just like in this film, with the addition of the romance genre, David succeeded in making a film that was quite solid and entertained the audience. Even though the storyline is quite slow, with the help of fast editing and balanced with some jokes, this film is not boring even though its duration is 2 hours.

With the main character Colt Seavers as a stuntman, this film conveys the aspirations of stuntmen by bringing the audience’s perspective regarding the inequality of a stuntman’s life when compared to the main actor.

Several scenes and dialogues clearly state that with a very risky and heavier workload, it seems that the life of a stuntman is no better than that of an actor who is famous for the face he uses in his films.

The choice of actors and actresses in this film also seems fitting and suited to their respective characters. Ryan Gosling, who has played in several Box Office films, also shows his best performance in this film as Colt Seavers.

But unfortunately Emily Blunt mightn’t match Ryan’s acting dominance. Even so, Emily is still good enough to play Jody in this film. Aaron Taylor-Johnson also lacks authority in this film, in fact the atmosphere of fear is shown more by his aide character than by Tom Ryder himself.

The visuals presented in this film are also quite satisfying. By using an IMAX certified camera, the details shown in this film are amazing.

It can be seen from the technical aspect that using a Panavision camera in several scenes makes the action scenes feel very dramatic and amazing because of the resolution offered. With Panavision, some shots are taken with resolutions up to 6-8K and allow up to 75 fps so some shots in slow motion feel great.

The scoring presented also feels very fluid throughout the film, making the action scenes even more tense and dramatic. Some music is also included to suit the mood of the scene. Such as the use of AC/DC’s Thunderstruck when Colt’s character turns point, and Taylor Swift’s All to Well when Colt is sad and confused.

The sets used in this film are very limited. Most of the action takes place in the desert and on the road. Even though it reduces the impression of fantastic action, this film still manages to present great action on a limited scale.

The roads and desert are enough to create an impression of trust in the audience which makes every action scene still feel and the audience can still admire it.

Finally, this film can be a viewing option that is quite refreshing and exciting. With packaging like the Hollywood industry in general, this film offers a new perspective, namely from the stuntman who was an important pioneer behind the success of action films in Hollywood.
