The Federal League: A new era begins in the third category

With a new name and 102 participants, everything is ready for the start of the 2022 edition of the Men’s Federal. Get to know the teams, the dispute format and the composition of the divisions.

The 2022 season of the Federal Basketball League will begin on January 28. The third division of Argentine basketball begins a new era, with a name change, record participation and extensive geographic coverage. To give a sense of integral belonging to all of Argentine basketball, linking the brands of the three professional leagues, the Federal Tournament will be renamed the Federal League, since it is the previous category to ascend to the Argentine League.

The brand new edition will have an unprecedented participation in history, with 102 teams involved representing 20 federations of our country, which once again places the event as the sporting competition with the greatest geographical coverage in the country. The activity will be divided into eight regional divisions and some of them will also be subdivided. The eight zones will be: NOA, Cuyo, NEA, Entre Ríos, Córdoba-Santa Fe, Region 1, Patagonia and Buenos Aires-FeBAMBA. The first stage will be played within each division until the first week of May. As of that date, the four qualifiers from each division will access the next stage, crossing as follows: NOA vs. Cuyo, NEA vs. Entre Ríos, Córdoba-Santa Fe vs. Region 1 and Patagonia vs. Buenos Aires-FeBAMBA.

Regarding the composition of the squads, as has already been reported, they will be made up of five older players, two U23 players, three U21 players and two U19 or younger players. In all cases, the year 2022 will be used to calculate these ages. That is, those born in 1998 or before will be considered older players. Those born in 1999 and 2000 will be U23 cards, the U21 cards will be made up of those born in 2001 and 2002, while those born in 2003 onwards will be considered U19. The novelty for this edition is that up to four U23s and six U21s can be registered on the list in good faith as long as they have been with the club for a year or more.

Everything is ready, there is very little left for the start of a historic season that promises to be exciting. I met the protagonists!
