Slack in sight for local finances following two years of improvement. “The current financial year will undoubtedly end with difficulty,” warns La Banque Postale in its traditional economic report published this Friday. According to its forecasts, gross savings – one of the main indicators for assessing the financial health of local authorities – might contract by 9% in 2023.

After reaching a high last year (46.3 billion), this self-financing capacity, which corresponds to the balance between revenue and operating expenses, would thus land at 42.1 billion euros in 2023. Or close to the level of 2019 (42.6 billion), which was the record year before the health crisis. “The excellent results observed at the end of 2022 […] might therefore have been, for various reasons, only a start,” comments La Banque Postale.
