“We are pleased with the responsiveness and great interest of meadow managers, which shows that the meadow product brand has a place in Latvia and the right time has come to create it. Together with the owners and experts, we will continue the development of the criteria for the Pļava product brand, thus approaching a new approach to nature protection in Latvia – preserving natural values while simultaneously developing business,” says Inga Muižniece, project manager at the Latvian Nature Foundation.
Meadow managers who have applied for the creation of the Meadow product brand produce or plan to produce a wide range of products – beef, sheep, goat meat and meat products, medicinal plants, honey and honey products, dairy products, and there is also great interest in the development of tourism and recreation offers. There are also farms that want to operate in the collection of meadow plant seeds, which is a completely new niche in Latvia – there is a great demand for meadow plant seeds, but they cannot be purchased. Some of the farms expressed interest in learning more about the restoration of natural meadows and getting an evaluation of their lawn from an expert’s point of view.
Brand development of natural meadow products is one of the activities of the ambitious integrated project LIFE-IP LatViaNature. The next stage in the development of the meadow products brand will be a cycle of seminars on the management and restoration of natural grasslands, educating owners about various types of production and quality issues, and marketing training will also be offered. At the same time, work has already started on the development of brand strategy and brand criteria. In the autumn of this year, a competition for small grants will be announced for the creation of innovative meadow products, and cooperation with chefs in testing meat products will also be formed.
