Iga ¦wiątek (1st WTA) will not win the WTA 1000 tournament in Rome for the third time in a row. The Pole was forced to withdraw during the match with Jelena Rybakina (6th WTA), because she felt the effects of the event from the seventh game of the second set. Świątek needed medical help after the second set and returned to the game, but with the score 2: 2 she was forced to scratch. The match ended with the score 6:4, 6:7 (3:7), 2:2 and Rybakina advanced. Now Świątek addressed the fans for the first time.

Iga Świątek’s coach, Tomasz Wiktorowski, said right after the match that his charge will undergo an MRI and full diagnostics of the injured leg on Thursday morning. The best tennis player in the world finally spoke on social media and informed about what actually happened on the night from Wednesday to Thursday.
“Hi. You’re probably wondering what happened last night,” Swiatek began. “During the second set, I suffered a thigh injury and now the diagnosis is underway. We will have more information for you in the coming days” – announced the leader of the WTA ranking.
It is not known how serious the injury is and whether Iga Świątek will be able to take part in the Grand Slam Roland Garros. The French tournament starts in a week and a half, and the Polish woman was a definite favorite to win. She has already won twice on these courts, in 2020 and 2022.
The leader of the WTA ranking in 2023 has a lot of bad luck. Due to health reasons, she had already withdrawn from the Miami Open and the Bille Jean Cup. She returned to acting in Stuttgart at the end of April and managed to perform in Madrid and now in Rome. It is possible that she will take a break again and return to full fitness.

Due to injuries, Jelena Rybakina advanced to the semi-finals of the tournament, where she will face Jelena Ostapenko (20th WTA). The Latvian defeated Paula Badosa (35th WTA) 6:2, 4:6, 6:3 in the quarterfinals. The match between Rybakina and Ostapenko is scheduled for Friday, May 19 at around 13:00.
