However, the North Atlantic offered punishing weather conditions. Thick clouds, persistent fog, and intermittent storms routinely blocked the sky, forcing Brown to rely on dead reckoning while Alcock fought to keep the bucking biplane stable in zero-visibility conditions.
The crisis peaked during the early morning hours of June 15, when the Vimy plunged into a dense fog bank so thick that Alcock could no longer see the wingtips or discern the horizon.
The Legacy of a Wooden Leap
Despite the rough landing, both men emerged uninjured, securing their place in history just weeks after the U.S. Navy’s NC-4 flying boat had completed the first multi-stage transatlantic crossing via the Azores. While the Navy’s journey utilized a series of coordinated stopping points and support ships, Alcock and Brown proved that the vast oceanic barrier could be conquered in a single, uninterrupted bound.
