Speedweek readers know the strange story: The red Ferrari F512 M Testarossa (worth around 400,000 euros), which was stolen from then Ferrari star Gerhard Berger (64) in 1995, has now resurfaced in Great Britain. The car was sold by a British dealer in London to a US customer – the export could still be stopped.
The history of the car is more than adventurous, as the vehicle has traveled halfway around the world. The Ferrari was shipped to Japan in 1995 immediately after it was stolen in Italy and only returned to Europe in 2023.
But the theft in 1995 on the occasion of the Imola Grand Prix is also reminiscent of an action crime thriller. Berger was driving in his last year at Scuderia Ferrari. The noble racer was stolen from the Wörgler directly from the spacious parking lot of a hotel near the Imola motorway exit. The Tyrolean himself almost got hurt when he tried to stop the driver and ultimately had to jump to save himself.
When he noticed Berger, the thief decided to drive towards the Tyrolean. “I think I’m crazy, my car is rolling – but I have the key in my pocket,” said Berger, who wanted to go to dinner at the time, to the Kronenzeitung. “I wanted to stop him, but then I could only save myself with a quick jump to the side.”
According to the police, investigations into the matter are still ongoing – no one has been arrested yet.
By the way: On the same day, Berger’s then teammate Jean Alesi (59) had his company Ferrari stolen from the hotel parking lot. However, this car – in silver color – has not yet appeared.
