This Monday, the Foreign Press Association finally sold the exploitation rights of the Golden Globes. After the multiple controversies in which they were involved, the group dissolved and the awards ceremony was in charge of the producers Dick Clark Prods and Eldridge Industries.
“Today marks an important milestone in the evolution of the Golden Globes,” exclaimed Eldridge President Todd Boehly, who already served as interim CEO of the awards.
The Golden Globes were awards instituted by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association since 1943. Until then, the Association operated as a non-profit entity that had a contract with NBC for its production and subsequent television.
The medium paid 60 million dollars a year to produce the gala and, together with the organization, ensured that the proceeds were destined for charitable causes. In 2021, an investigation by the Los Angeles Times newspaper revealed that the entity had committed alleged crimes of corruption and influence peddling when choosing its winners. This caused actors like Tom Cruise, Scarlett Johansson and Mark Ruffalo to return their awards.
A year later, another controversy broke out due to the lack of African-American representation among the members of the Association, adding another setback capable of explaining how the Golden Globes came to have 26.8 million viewers in 2005 and in the current season they reached their historic floor. with 6.3 million audience.
The 81st edition of the Golden Globes is scheduled for Sunday, January 7, 2024, although it has not yet been announced which television channel or platform will carry it after its relationship with NBC expired earlier this year.
