The French Institute’s Support for the Dance Sector in Africa: The Dance Biennale and Résidanses Program

The French institute supports the structuring of the dance sector in Africa with two programs in particular, the Biennale de la danse en Afrique and the Résidanses program.

The Dance Biennale in Africa

The African Dance Biennale is a major event to consolidate the development and visibility of choreographic creation on the continent. Supported by the French Institute since its creation almost 30 years ago, the originality of this event is to be itinerant and to rely on festivals supported by cultural operators from the continent. A recognized discovery and dissemination platform, it attracts dance professionals, programmers and journalists from around the world.

An artistic committee bringing together choreographers and operators from the continent

The dynamics of the Dance Biennale is supported by an artistic committee, made up of choreographers and key players in dance in Africa: Hafiz Dhaou (Tunisia), Taoufik Izzediou (Morocco), Qudus Onikeku (Nigeria), Salia Sanou (Burkina Faso ), Virginie Dupray (France), and Quito Tembe (Mozambique).

The program from Quito Tembe to Maputo

Bold and committed, this new edition in Mozambique, from November 20 to 26, aims to constitute a real showcase of contemporary dance in Africa, with a particular focus on dance from East and Southern Africa. . For six days, the city will welcome many emerging African artists and choreographers, including seven young choreographers supported by the “Résidanses” program: Daouda Keita, Mohamed Lamqayassi, Kossivi Afiadegnigban, Mai Julie, Judith Olivia, Carolina Manuel, Rita Couto. This edition aims to explore essential issues, to question gender expression, climate change or even social changes and racial discrimination. In addition to choreographic pieces, the Biennale will develop a platform for training, support for the emerging scene and meetings between artists and professionals.

Professional Accès Culture days

Backed by the Biennale, an Accès Culture event will also be organized on Friday, November 24, in the form of Professional Days. Thus, around twenty African and French operators with an interest in dance or more broadly in live performance are invited to take part in the event.
