2024-03-28 12:09:03

The Healthcare Data Institute, a think tank dedicated to transforming the health system through the scientific and economic valorization of health data, announces the publication of a new report. Titled “How far can data support the transformation of health through AI?“, it explores use cases, examines the barriers and accelerators to the development and adoption of AI in healthcare and offers 10 recommendations for successful integration.

AI has immense potential in healthcare and has paved the way for significant advancements in the diagnosis, treatment and management of diseases. Using sophisticated algorithms, it enables rapid and accurate analysis of large medical data sets, improving the diagnostic capabilities of healthcare professionals and enabling early detection of diseases. Additionally, by leveraging individual data such as medical history and genetic characteristics, AI offers the ability to personalize treatments for each patient, leading to more effective healthcare and better outcomes.

Furthermore, AI can optimize hospital operations, reduce costs and improve chronic disease management through continuous monitoring of patients at home. Finally, by accelerating medical research and facilitating the discovery of new treatments, AI opens new perspectives for innovation in the field of health.

The Healthdata Care Institute report takes stock of the use of AI in the care pathway and the health system. Among the use cases examined based on French and international examples to assess their level of maturity, we find:

  • Cancer prevention;
  • Increased diagnosis;
  • Precision medicine;
  • Remote monitoring;
  • Supply management;
  • Time optimization;
  • The organization of hospital flows;
  • Medical deserts.

It highlights a lack of mature solutions that can be used industrially and that, despite its disruptive potential, the adoption of AI in health is hampered by European fragmentation in terms of standards, regulations, uses and the market. It also highlights the crucial importance of overcoming these obstacles and to achieve this offers 10 recommendations that focus on:

  • The need to simplify standards and promote collective European adoption of AI by health stakeholders;
  • Initial and continuing training of healthcare professionals on AI and Data Science;
  • The establishment of a national communication plan demonstrating the benefits and challenges of AI to involve the general public in the AI revolution;
  • An educated and informed positioning of decision-makers on AI health issues for reasoned support of solutions.

For the Healthdata Care Institute, the successful integration of AI in health requires a collaborative, human-centered approach that embraces both technological innovations and ethical and regulatory imperatives. The reasoned actions, guided by a strategic and pragmatic vision proposed in its report aim to enable key players in the sector (decision-makers, health professionals, institutions and patients) to “making AI a beneficial reality for all in health“.

Christian DELEUZE, President of the Healthcare Data Institute, concludes:

“We are at the dawn of a major transformation in health, guided by concrete actions rather than promises. This report is a call for commitment to make AI a lever for more precise and personalized medicine. Together, let’s convert these visions into realities, so that AI becomes a driving force for improving patient care and support. The path is clear, the solutions within our reach. It is now up to stakeholders in the health sector to respond to this call, so that tomorrow, AI in health is synonymous with progress for everyone.”
