Foreign Minister Park Jin left for Singapore this afternoon for bilateral talks, and is scheduled to go to Bali, Indonesia, where the G20 Foreign Ministers’ Meeting will be held on the 7th.
An official from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs explained that the heads of foreign affairs from 20 major economies around the world, including the United States and Russia, will gather face-to-face at this meeting, and the Ukrainian foreign minister is also specially invited to participate via video.
The G20 is a meeting body that discusses international economic cooperation that does not deal with political and military security issues like NATO, but the impact of the Ukraine crisis on the world economy is likely to be an issue.
This meeting will be the first time that Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov will effectively participate in a multilateral foreign ministers’ meeting in which the West also participates after the invasion of Ukraine.
A battle is expected between the G7, which claims the current crisis is due to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, and Russia, which claims to be attributable to Western sanctions against Russia.
An official from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said, “In the case of Minister Park, I think there will be many opportunities to meet Lavrov several times.” explained.
Minister Park is also coordinating schedules for more than a dozen soda-party and bilateral talks with countries participating in the meeting, and the first face-to-face meeting with Chinese State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi is most likely being considered.
In addition, it is highly likely that the foreign ministers of the Republic of Korea, the United States and Japan will gather in one place a week after the Korea-U.S.-Japan summit was held at the NATO summit.
