The Gaza Strip Power Crisis: Energy Authority Confirms Shutdown of Only Power Plant

The Energy Authority in the Gaza Strip confirmed that the only power plant in the Gaza Strip had stopped due to running out of fuel on the fifth day of the escalation between Israel and the Hamas movement.

The head of the Energy Authority, Jalal Ismail, said in a statement: “The only power plant in the Gaza Strip stopped at 2:00 pm (11:00 GMT) due to running out of fuel.” Ismail had warned of this in a previous statement.

Palestinian Health Minister Mai Al-Kaila warned that the fuel stock necessary to operate electricity generators in Gaza Strip hospitals will run out tomorrow. The Minister said in statements to Voice of Palestine Radio that this matter will exacerbate the conditions that she described as catastrophic in hospitals. Especially “after the electricity stops within hours from now.”

For his part, Melhem told Voice of Palestine Radio, in previous statements, that the remaining fuel at the Gaza Electricity Company – the only station that provides electricity – is only enough for between 10 and 12 hours at most.

Israel cut off electricity supplies to the Gaza Strip on Monday, as part of what it described as a comprehensive blockade in response to a sudden and widespread attack launched by the Hamas movement.

Also, the head of the Palestinian Energy Authority, Dhafer Melhem, told the Cairo TV news channel on Wednesday that water pumping station facilities in Gaza will stop working following a power outage in the Strip.

He added that the electricity generators in Gaza’s hospitals will work for only four days and then they will stop. Due to the lack of necessary fuel.

Melhem told the news channel: “The Israeli occupation destroyed alternative electrical energy projects throughout the Gaza Strip… and disconnected the feeding and electricity supply lines in Gaza, and the generating station stopped working.”
