The ghost village of Doel will be able to resurrect, after decades of agony

His gaze will eventually turn to the left bank of the Scheldt. The one, precisely, where the small village of Doel is located. In 1968lban on building there is decreed. It is the founding act of Doel’s long agony. No expropriation is implemented, but doubt is sown: will survive, will not survive?

On 1978, Mark Eyskens (CVP), then Secretary of State for the regional economy, went to Doel by helicopter to reassure: the village could definitely continue. In the 80s, Doel seems saved.

But in 1998the JT announces it: Doel is going to be wiped off the map. In question, the construction of a new dock: the Deurganck dock. The village has already gradually emptied (there are about twenty empty houses) but it still counts 900 inhabitantsa school, and a baker who fears for the future of her business.
