Truck drivers sometimes wear gloves to perform certain tasks. So do truck mechanics, as do warehouse workers. Except that their work environments differ and may require specific types of protection.

There is now an online selection tool, aptly named The glove box, allowing you to select the right type of gloves for a given profession. This platform was developed by the Robert-Sauvé Research Institute in Occupational Health and Safety (IRSST).

The site notably offers an interactive tool to help with glove selection. To use it, simply answer various questions, an exercise that takes five to 10 minutes. The accumulated responses lead to the selection criteria for protective gloves.

The user then obtains a personalized printable report containing all the key elements to facilitate communication with the supplier or manufacturer and choose the best gloves.

An inventory of risks is also presented: mechanical (cuts, perforations, impacts, etc.), physical (vibrations, radiation, thermal shock, cold or extreme heat, etc.), biological (bacteria, viruses, human or animal fluids, etc.) and chemical ( solvents, oils, chemicals, etc.).

The types of protective gloves (sewn, coated, metal mesh, unsupported polymer, knitted), materials, functionality, tactile sensitivity and comfort are all elements that the site covers.

The glove box also includes a section that refers to all the North American standards in force in the world of protective gloves.

Each year, approximately 15% of occupational injuries accepted by the Commission for Standards, Equity, Health and Safety at Work (CNESST) concern wrists, hands and fingers.
