the government decides to extend the transition period by 24 months

South Sudan’s government of national unity has decided to extend the transition period by 24 months, South Sudanese Minister of Government Affairs Martin Elia Lomuro announced on Thursday.

«After much deliberation, the (2018 Agreement Implementation) Committee agreed to extend the transition period by 24 months “, said Mr. Lomuro in front of diplomats, South Sudanese President Salva Kiir and First Vice-President Riek Machar.

The South Sudanese Minister of Governmental Affairs stressed that a new roadmap has been agreed for “addressing the challenges hampering the implementation of the peace agreement».

The end of the transition period was scheduled for February 2023 following several postponements for lack of progress in the peace agreement which ended the civil war in this country in 2018.
