“The Great Surgeon of Deception” unravels the story of Paolo Macchiarini, a surgeon who once enjoyed great prestige, but whose name was tarnished following the deaths of several patients undergoing trachea transplants.
Macchiarini defended the feasibility of performing transplants with artificial tracheas, an idea that lacked solid foundation and culminated in tragedy for his patients. In July 2022, Macchiarini faced trial and was convicted for the events.
The official synopsis for the series reads: “Dr. Paolo Macchiarini is famous for his revolutionary trachea transplants using stem cell technology. There is only one problem: his patients do not survive.”
