The Hidden Dangers of Scratched Utensils: Protect Your Health and Lower the Risk of Cancer

Doctors warn against keeping scratched utensils and continuing to cook in them, as this is harmful to health and increases the risk of cancer.

Dr. Poonam Desai said: “The utensils that are manufactured to be resistant to food sticking during cooking are coated with heat-resistant and anti-stick materials known as “forever chemicals.”

Once ingested, these substances can remain in your body for long periods of time, and are sometimes slowly eliminated through urine.

Desai added: These substances cause endocrine disruptors, can cause hormonal imbalance, fertility problems, and even increase the risk of cancer.

Researchers at the University of Southern California have previously linked “forever chemicals” lurking in pots, pans, spoons and other household utensils to liver cancer.

Desai pointed out that she also avoids using “porcelain or ceramic utensils that are susceptible to scratching because they contain a layer of aluminum that can get stuck in our food when they are scratched.”

“For me, if a pan is nonstick or ceramic and it’s scratched or cracked, I usually throw it away,” she said.
