On the phone, Karine Vanasse doesn’t even try to contain her enthusiasm when asked to comment on the successes in Hollywood of Denis Villeneuve, with whom she filmed Polytechnicin 2009.
“Spielberg marked the imagination of many people with E.T.and Denis is doing that,” says the actress and producer, who will attend the Canadian premiere of Dune: 2e partWednesday, in Montreal.
Karine Vanasse was working in Hollywood when Denis Villeneuve’s talent began to attract attention in the early 2010s, thanks to the film Fireswhich was nominated for an Oscar.
“I remember when I made Pan Am, Margot Robbie was part of the cast and her managers asked me if there was a way to meet Denis Villeneuve. The buzz around Denis outside of Quebec has been going on for a long time.”

“I compared him to Denys Arcand for his control of the stage, his calm, his ideas, except that Denis Villeneuve has a more international career. Humility and her ability to treat everyone equally are character traits that Karine Vanasse admires and that several Hollywood stars have praised over the years.
“It’s rare that we hear actors speak with such honesty and affection about what they feel for a director,” she observes.
“There is something family about his sets. I felt it for the first time with Prisoners. At the press conference, we felt the family aspect and the camaraderie, not only between the actors, but towards him. It was beautiful to see. It’s done with pleasure. For me, it is representative of our way of working in Quebec. It touches me a lot to feel that from him.”
