The Human Milk Bank of the General Hospital of Medellín (HGM) commemorates its first 10 years of service to the community.

The strategy promotes in a solidarity way, the link between breastfeeding mothers who wish to donate this food and newborn babies who cannot be breastfed.
This fact is added to the celebration of Mother’s Day, as a gesture of gratitude to those who have contributed to the capital of Antioquia having healthier children due to the donation of human milk.
“We want to thank all the women who have been involved with our project and we extend the invitation to all nursing mothers to join by donating milk. Some requirements must be met, such as being breastfeeding, exclusively breastfeeding your child, having negative tests for infectious diseases and remembering that the hospital can send qualified personnel to the donor’s home free of charge,” explained the coordinator of the Milk Bank, Neyla Rosa Mazo Calle.

The community can also support the work of the bank by donating transparent glass jars with wide-mouth plastic screw lids, with a capacity between 200 and 400 milliliters, to store donated and pasteurized human milk.
In 10 years, this milk bank has benefited 9,115 babies; 5,121 liters of human milk have been pasteurized and distributed and there have been 906 donors.
The HGM Milk Bank is unique in Antioquia. Thanks to its expert human group and its technology, it analyzes and processes the donated liquid to guarantee quality and microbiological safety conditions. In Colombia there are only 13 banks of this nature registered.
